Wegovy is a new medication used to help manage blood sugar and promote weight loss.

What is Wegovy, and how does it work?
Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription drug that helps with weight loss by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1, which affects appetite regulation. It helps reduce hunger, increases feelings of fullness, and ultimately leads to a reduction in calorie intake. Wegovy is a once-weekly injection for adults who struggle with obesity or are overweight and also have health problems related to being overweight.
Wegovy is intended for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater, or for adults with a BMI of 27 or greater who also have at least one weight-related medical condition, such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol. It is especially helpful for people who have struggled to achieve weight loss through exercise and diet alone.
Weight loss results vary, but in clinical trials, many patients lost about 15-20% of their initial body weight within 68 weeks. Individual results may depend on factors such as diet, exercise, and personal metabolism. Wegovy works best when used in conjunction with lifestyle changes, including a balance diet and regular physical activity.
Many users begin to notice a decrease in hunger and gradual weight loss during the first few weeks. However, significant weight loss is typically seen within a few months. Wegovy is designed for long-term use to support sustainable weight management, so steady progress is normal.
Wegovy is given as a once-weekly injection using a pre-filled pen that makes it easy for users to administer at home. The injection is usually given in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. We recommend it should be given on the same day every week. You will be given instructions on how to use the pen safely and effectively.
The most common side effects of Wegovy include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and upset stomach, especially in the initial stages of treatment when the body is adjusting. These symptoms are usually mild and tend to improve over time. Rare but serious side effects include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and in some cases, changes in blood sugar. It is important to stay in touch with your healthcare provider to manage any side effects.
Wegovy has been approved by the MHRA (The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency) for long-term weight management in appropriate patients and has undergone rigorous testing for safety and efficacy. However, it may not be suitable for everyone, especially people with a history of pancreatitis, certain types of thyroid cancer, or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2. We recommend you disclose any medical history or concerns in our online assessment before starting treatment.
Even though no specific diet is required, Wegovy is most effective in conjunction with a healthy and balanced eating plan. We recommend a nutrient-dense diet that includes lean protein, healthy fats, whole grains, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. A well-balanced diet will not only promote weight loss, but also improve overall health, making it easier to maintain results.
In many cases, Wegovy can be taken together with other medicines. However, it is important to tell your healthcare provider about any medications, supplements, or over-the-counter products you are using, as Wegovy may interact with some medications, especially those that affect blood sugar. This is particularly important for individuals with type 2 diabetes who may be taking other GLP-1 receptor agonists or insulin.
Wegovy is designed for long-term weight management and many patients continue to use it to maintain their weight loss. However, the length of use will depend on your progress and goals. Our consultants will regularly evaluate your results and can adjust them if necessary.
If you miss a dose of Wegovy, take it as soon as possible within 5 days of the missed dose. If more than 5 days have passed, skip the missed dose and resume regular dosing the following week. Avoid taking extra doses to make up for missed doses. Consistency is key to keeping Wego effective, so setting reminders can be helpful.
Once you reach your weight loss goal, it may be possible to gradually reduce or discontinue Wegovy under the guidance of your healthcare provider. However, maintaining weight without Wegovy will require lifestyle changes and healthy habits. Some patients may benefit from an ongoing lower maintenance dose to help maintain results.
Wegovy can affect your blood sugar levels, especially if you have diabetes. It can lower blood sugar, which can be beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes, but requires careful monitoring. If you are taking other diabetes medications, your healthcare provider may adjust these doses to prevent hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). In individuals without diabetes, blood sugar changes are usually minimal, but should still be monitored.
While occasional alcohol consumption may be permitted, it is best to limit alcohol intake while taking Wegovy. Alcohol can interact with medications, potentially increasing the risk of side effects such as low blood sugar. Discussing alcohol consumption with your healthcare provider can help ensure the safe use of Wegovy.
Wegovy may be a good option if you have struggled with weight loss through diet and exercise alone and you meet the BMI criteria or have a weight-related medical condition. Our online assessment is the best way to determine if Wego’s fits your goals and health needs. We will review your medical history, which will help our consultants determine the potential benefits and risks, and create a plan tailored to your weight loss journey.
